Friday AM class - Durango Public Library 9:00-12:00 $50 class fee +
$10 kit fee
Color Play I This hands on class, MJ will introduce you to the four rules of
color interaction and show you how to apply them to your own quilt design to
create dramatic effects-regardless of your subject matter. MJ will show you how to
• Add sparkle to your quilts.
• Create dramatic focal points.
• Add exciting visual movement.
• Add metallic effects (without using metallic fabric or thread).
• Make your quilts glow as though they were lit from within.
This will be a no sew class.
Friday PM class - Durango Public Library 1:00-4:00 $50 class fee +
$10 kit fee
Color Play II MJ will continue with the exploration of color interactions and
will continue to show you how to:
• Create powerful and credible transparencies
• Create beautiful luminosity in your quilts
• Alter the appearance of a color by placing a different color next to it
This is a no sew class.
BONUS…If you take both classes there will be only one $10 kit fee!

SUNDAY - Bite Size Gems TBK Bank 259 W 9th St., Community Room, 9:00am-4:00 pm, $90
MJ Kinman, maker of giant gem quilts, will show you how to create sparkling
gem blocks using the design and piecing techniques she relies on to
create her signature quilts. During this fast-paced class, students will create their
own singularly beautiful work of faceted light. MJ’s inspiration is
gemstones, but yours might be landscapes, florals, portraits, abstracts, or
any other kind of inspiration. The technique works for all!
SWEETHEART OF A DEAL —
First 20 to sign up for all three classes by
Valentine's Day (February 14) will save $30.00!
MJ Kinman’s passion is creating quilts inspired by beautiful gems. The key is
freezer paper, that wonderful product that adheres to fabric when ironed.
MJ’s work has been exhibited at the National Quilt Museum, the International
Quilt Museum, the New England Quilt Museum, Quilt Festival (Houston, TX),
Quilt Week (Paducah, KY), and Festival of Quilts (Birmingham, UK). Most
recently, MJ’s piece “Torch Song” was exhibited at the Art Quilt Elements 2024
Biennial (Wayne, PA), where she received the Cindy Friedman Master Award for
Excellence.
Her work is included in collections as varied as Maker’s Mark Distillery, the
National Quilt Museum, the International Quilt Museum, and private collections.
MJ’s Birthstone Series patterns feature traditional birthstone gems, and her
Diamond Divas Series offer large, artistic quilts easily customizable by makers.
Her first book, Gemstone Quilts, was released by C&T Publishing in 2020.
